If you are traveling outside the United States, it is best to carry a passport.  Time limits have been imposed on when that will be required to Canada, Caribbean, Mexico, etc.

Check to see if you need a Visa for your destination.

Pack light by mixing, matching and layering of clothing.  Take the "trial" size of toothpaste, shaving cream, etc. and repackage all the cosmetics you can into small travel containers.

For emergencies, leave a complete itinerary with contact phone numbers with someone at home.
